Correction

Just wanted to thank Christina Topf of The Rabbit Hill for pointing out that Holly Hope should carry her rabbitry title since she was bred by her.

So for the record, Holly Hope's full name is The Rabbit Hill's Holly Hope.

Also, of all things, I missed out her website link on my Favorite Websites list. Cannot stop but to wonder how the heck I could miss that out. A thousand apologies to Christina on this.

Thank you so much for sharing your rabbits with me!

Grab a bunny chew toy today!!!

My bunny friend SB is selling some partially home made toys for small animals suitable for rabbits. The wood blocks are save, the coloring used are non-toxic food colorings and the rope used is untreated sisal rope safe for chewing and digested.

If you are interested, please do email me and I will get her to contact you. I believe she does not do posting at the moment and if she does, it would be within Malaysia only.

Advice on importing

We must always take extra precautions when buying things online or buying goods from people abroad. When I started researching on importing my Holland Lops, I encountered many different types of breeders and some are outright shocking.

Most of the breeders are reluctant to ship this way because it seemed to them that Asians are distrustful. But little do these breeders know that buyers from anywhere would also think likewise. It takes a lot of trust for someone to be sending monies to a stranger. For me at this moment, the rabbitry where I got my rabbits delivers quite decently with some glitches.

I came across a breeder in particular that promises to make a deal but changes her mind as soon as she made up. That is outright insincere.

Some breeders only have the $ as a topic of discussion. You know right away, they are in it for business and the welfare of the rabbits are questionable.

Buyers must also take into the consideration the current economic situation that has befallen the US. Many smaller rabbitries there may opt to sell out their rabbits and some may resort to schemes just to survive the downturn. Most breeders abroad will raise the prices of the rabbits just because they are shipping them out of their country. The prices does not necessary reflect the quality of the rabbits. Some may even send barren does.

So, as far as breeders must protect themselves, buyers too have to be very careful in dealing.

And I also do not deny the fact that there are super ethical and honest breeders. These are the handful of ethical ones.

For me personally, what I would love to see in a good rabbit breeder are:

1) Honesty - explain thoroughly what the rabbit lacks and how it can be improved, show good photos that reflect the real structure of the rabbit, charges at reasonable prices and etc

2) Sincerity & Concern - shows concern for their rabbits instead of the money that you are about to send & always updating buyers on the progress

3) Promptness in delivery - send pedigrees to buyers as promised promptly

Lastly, it is the people that we are dealing with at the end of the day. We have to be very tactful so not to get cheated. That would be the last thing I want to experience for this wonderful hobby.

May your every dealings be fruitful and successful. And to all my friends(breeders) in US, may you and your wonderful rabbits survive through this crisis. God blesses all of you.

Support good & reputable local pet stores!!!

The world is made up of GOOD and BAD. As there are many bad pet stores, there are also a few good ones. To begin with, I am a sucker for supporting underdogs. Truthfully, I believe in practicality and I love patronizing humble/modest establishments. In lieu with that, I would like to introduce an online pet store that is worth mentioning.

I believe it is always a good effort to bring business online. You are able to expand the target audience and if the services are good, then we should all support for the hard work invested.

The online pet store that I would like to feature for now is Pet Shack. This humble establishment was setup by a husband and wife team based on their love for their pets. I know staying profitable while giving the best to livestocks in a pet store is never easy but I believe the people behind Pet Shack did it quite well.

Another applaudable attribute of Pet Shack is that, they are constantly seeking for the best ways to improve, promote and practice responsible pet ownership. This is particularly evident for me when they took the initiative to carry the Oxbow Hay products. For a small establishment to be in tuned with the needs of rabbits in Malaysia goes to show that Pet Shack is constantly seeking to provide the best for our pet rabbits.

You can visit their online shop at http://www.petshack.com.my.

Tru-Luv Holly Hope: Day 42

She's 6 weeks old today. Here are some cute photos of her.

She is just so photogenic and ever ready to pose for me. Just nudge her chin and she'll sit up straight. Lovely...

And after all the posing, this is what she did:

Might be taking a break

My main goal is to fill up the blog calendar on my side bar. I am juggling with loads of things at the moment. My work is kind of hectic at this moment and I preparing for the big move.

So I am considering to stop posting for a while. But first, I need to convince myself that it would be alright leaving some dates blank on the calendar. LOL!!!!!

Anyhow, the hits to this blog has been quite stagnant for a while. I was hoping that my readers could give me some feedback so that I get more visitors and not just slip away as quietly as they came. But that is just what I might be getting. I really need to know how to make this blog more interesting and get more hits to it.

I guess that photos do make a lot of difference.

Will post photos soon!

Transition Period

I have started to get really personal with my blog. So much so that I am starting to disclose quite personal information about myself to everyone. I do not know if it a wise thing to do, but the general rule of thumb is to keep a level of anonymity to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Another thing I try very hard to do is keep my posts positive because I believe there are many young people having access to the internet and I have high regards for the future generations. I am sure most of my visitors are made up of young people and I feel that it is my duty to provide them with clean contents.

I prefer to be myself when I write and most of my peers told me that they found me very expressive and vocal about things. And most of them are right. I normally get myself into trouble expressing too much.

But that is just how God made me and I do not think it is fair to take that against me. In anyway, I do contribute to add varieties to the world. I also have a role to play in making this world more colorful than usual. LOL.

That being said, I am starting to take this hobby of rabbit raising less seriously because I have seen people who are far too serious to a point of burning bridges. After all, it is just a hobby and there should be information passed around generously. That is how a hobby can grow. Of course breeders have the full right to choose what they disclose or not but for me, I prefer to be expressive with every issue.

And of course, I try to filter out as much negativities possible to keep my blog a happy one for the enjoyment of all. We all face a lot of challenges while at work namely politics and such, so why bring it into our hobby where we suppose to enjoy?

I guess it will start being political when people get too serious about the entire thing. I am deciding not to take it seriously because I have seen how this obsessive compulsive behavior can ruin everything.

I see breeders in US going to the tables with very good sportsmanship. But sometimes there tend to be surprises because some may overreact for not winning. But I am even more surprised when I see bickering in places without SHOWS! That is simply amazing and unbelievable.

To end this post, I hope the many people that visits this blog regularly continue visiting and bring a couple of friends along so that we can enjoy the company. Let's grow this wonderful hobby together. Let our rabbits be a vessels to good friendship and bring hope to humanity which is so torn apart.

Goodwill to all...

Rabbit genetics

There is so much one can debate on genetics and with rabbits, you always hear breeders using the term line breeding & out crossing. I do not want to touch on the topics of inbreeding because I am totally against that although it is possible to do so and there are breeders using this technique as well. Inbreeding is when 2 siblings of the same litter are bred. This is what I do not do in my rabbitry.

Please allow me briefly explain the meaning of the terms here. Line breeding is the widely used technique by many breeders. They normally breed rabbits through mating father to daughter, son to mother or more distant relationship along the same LINEAGE i.e. nephew to aunts & etc. Why do this? Because to maintain a particular traits/characteristic of the rabbit, breeders need to get those exact genes into the offspring.

Out crossing is when 2 totally unrelated rabbits from totally unrelated lines are bred. Many breeders start off their own lines by out crossing more of the time. Until they get the desired traits laid down by certain standards by certain establishment, they start to use line breeding instead.

What seemed to be gross to many, it is so different with rabbits. Breeders normally keep their gene pool small in order to maintain the quality of their rabbits. But this is normally done when the desired traits start to manifest in the outcome of out crossing.

Therefore, if you see the ancestral lineage through the pedigrees, you might notice that there are many unrelated rabbits being bred to get the current generation. So far, what I notice with many breeders is that all their rabbits have different physical characteristics. But as long as all these rabbits adhere to the breed standards, they are show able. Some may have broader shoulders compared to others but those with narrower shoulders still able to be granded as well. Therefore, as long as the rabbit adhere to the minimum required standard, they are able to go onto the tables to be judged.

But their overall disposition may differ from line to line. That is how rabbitries establish their trademark. If that is not the situation, then we will have very generic rabbits that all look alike. There will not be varieties at all.

Just like how the many types of human behaviors define the many varieties in this world, rabbits are set apart through their characteristics, be it color or structure.

So it does not matter whether the gene pool is small or big, as long as the desired traits manifest in your rabbitry, you are heading the right way.

And who defines the desired traits? You and me. We have our own preferences on how our rabbits look. Once they adhere to the breed standard, we can work on the other "cosmetics".

In the end, who establishes the standards? It is mere human.

And who sets the real & physical standards?

God. Not all rabbits are born alike. Therefore, never let your weak human standard judge your rabbits. They are all made by God and are gifts to you.

Nuff said...

The many challenges: Transforming Negative to Positive

A hobby is suppose to give us happiness. As of late, I have been facing a lot of challenges not because of my rabbits but more of human issues. I guess I should just stop most of the human interactions.

I notice that I have been blogging on a negative note for the past few weeks. I need to turn that around to have more positive things on this blog. After all, the true joy and happiness comes from these wonderful rabbits.

I have to avoid being sucked into another dimension whereby people tend to bring others down to levitate themselves. I guess many people in this world likes to be important or at least be somewhere with the things they do. And fueled by this sort of obsession, they tend to trample on others.

I believe success is self defined most of the time and many people strive to achieve certain recognition. When they do not get it, they get frustrated and act in many different undesirable ways.

But I guess living in this world we have to accept that it is made up of many types of people with different mentalities. Why burn bridges all for the sake of rabbits?

For goodness sake, sharing is caring and let us all not resort to unnecessary bickering over a few lagomorphs alright? It is just so childish to be holding a rabbit and say “See, I have a better rabbit compared to yours”. I always believe that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.

An orphan by the streets may be cuddling a stray puppy at this very moment. Would he say that the puppy is ugly when it is all he/she have?

So let’s not judge others when we have the privilege to own what our heart desires and look lowly on others based on our own standards. God have not passed the last judgment yet so who are we to do so?

Crippling others for selfish gains

I have seen quite a few back biting amongst show dog breeders and I believe it is just so damn irrelevant. It is just amazing how much trouble these people is willing to go through just because of a hobby. I just cannot comprehend what all the bickering is all about. A few years back there were news about someone suing another person for selling a surgically fixed show dog that was later disqualified in the show rings.

Aren’t we being a little too serious here?

How many of us are willing to go all out just to stumble someone else? I believe there are some dog breeders out there in attempt to eliminate competition, they go to great lengths to sabotage their “opponents”. I believe this is fueled by some mad possessive behavior. What is it that we gain in all the winnings? Some people just cannot accept defeat as a challenge to improve oneself. Therefore, they rather come out with all sorts of schemes just to cripple the other.

I hope not to see this in the rabbit world because it is just so not worth it. In the name of goodwill, I hope all rabbit people here in Malaysia are nice individuals.

Will you go out of the way just to cripple someone else from getting what they like just because you feel envious or believe that you have the exclusive rights to own certain things which you hope others do not?

If you do have this sort of psychological problem, I pray for your soul.

For goodness sake, it is just RABBITS!

New Rabbitry Shelf: Proof Of Concept #2 (SUCCESS!)

I was looking forward to a dull Saturday but things took a super twist. I suddenly got this urge to try out the new shelving concept I had in mind. This time I decided to setup the actual one.

So off I went to the hardware shop to get some pipes and to a pet store to stock up on my cages. I need actual cages to make sure that my "mock test" works exactly how I want it to be.

On my first attempt, I built the first level too high up and leaving no height for the 3rd level. So I dismantle everything and then worked from ground up again.

I guess pictures will tell a thousand words. I am too tired to type so I'll just leave the photos to do all the talking:

Attempt #1:

Attempt #2:

Test Drive:

From every angle, the bunny "canon balls" just falls in to place. All in the pipe!!!!

Playing towards a healthy mind…

So far, I have not write about giving my rabbits toys to play with. On some occasions I do give them toilet rolls but I believe they deserve better toys than that. The only reason that I am unable to give them toys to play with is because of space. I like to see them having larger space so that I could include some mind-stimulating toys to keep them mentally healthy.

Yes, your rabbits do not get bored alone but needs some mental stimulation. Although it may just seemed like chewing on the toys, they do benefit from having toys. Cardboard boxes could be use for hiding and scratching. Wood blocks could be used for them to chew and "swing" around.

In short they will benefit more with toys especially rabbits kept alone. It is the same concept with other animals. Have you ever seen a lion walking in circles after being caged up for too long? That is what we call PACING. They pace around because the cages are too small and there isn't much to do in those cages.

I hope my rabbits do not start pacing or show some awkward behavior.

It would be feasible to pamper my hoppers with loads of toys soon and I am very happy to know that I could improve the quality of life for all my rabbits. Firstly, it would be possible because I am getting some toys from SB and also I would be able to give the rabbits more space once we move!

YAY! Happy days ahead for bunnies and me!

Love & Hate Relationship

I was thinking of pushing my breeding schedule a little forward so that I could have kits in the nest box end of June. For the past 3 days I have been trying to breed BlueBerry to Skor (under supervision that is) but BlueBerry does not seemed to accept Skor. Skor finds it hard to mate with her (I hope he is not that old - LOL) because she kept on running away.

Today they lied down side by side and it was quite a cute sight to behold. But I wanted them to mate, not just lie down beside each other. After a while both were at different corners seemed to be sulking. I wonder what the heck happened to them. Maybe Skor said something mean to her while lying down beside her. Loust pick up lines perhaps.

Bandie and Adinna accepted Skor instantly when I placed them together previously and it is so different with BlueBerry. Hope she will accept him soon because she has been showing me some behavior that seemed to say that she is ready to mate but when I place her with Skor, it is otherwise.

I have been putting them together in the evening. Maybe I’ll try putting them together in the morning over the weekend and hopefully they are morning people as suggested by SB. LOL!!!!

Tru-Luv Holly Hope: Day 35

It is pure joy to see Holly Hope growing up alright so far. Another 3 weeks and I can breath easy. I was all geared up for the photo shoot this evening as I prepared a little backdrop to take photos of Holly Hope. I waited for the right moment to click the camera button and when Holly Hope did a superb pose, the camera turned off itself and the screen reads "CHANGE BATTERIES". OH DARN! All the curses I could ever thought of just came off my mouth and I was so furious.

Luckily for my Sony Ericson K750i 2.0 Mega Pixels camera phone, I was able to take some decent photos. When batteries fail, you can definitely count on Sony Ericson (an endorsement line worth some sponsorship)! To be honest, my camera cellphone has been a great companion with me especially when I am on the move and needs to blog with photos. Since I stopped blogging on the other end, I forgot all about it until those darn batteries failed me on my Canon PowerShot camera. My Canon PowerShot A710 is another great companion for blogging (yet another free advertisement worth some sponsorship).

The conclusion and moral of the story is, keep those batteries FULLY CHARGED!!!!

Here's CUTE Holly Hope:

Top view looking good....

What's up!?

I disapprove you making me pose for so darn long!!!

Fickle, Erratic, Indecisiveness

In certain situations it may be really difficult for us to make up our minds as to settle for the best solutions or options.

I normally do not face much of this sort of situation because I normally have an idea of what I want with my rabbits. For example, if I need to decide on which kit to keep, I normally take the queue from the way they grow up. At certain age, you can roughly tell if they are growing up nicely.

I normally start to cull my rabbits mentally quite early because decisions must be made pretty fast when space is an issue. With a mental note on which to keep and which to cull, I will be able to execute my decision when the time is right.

I just hope that it will stay that way so that I will not be making life miserable for others. Imagine a hopeful child anticipating to get his first pet rabbit and how his/her hope is dashed just because I cannot make up my mind. Not something I would love to experience myself.

It is quite normal to come across people that have the worst ways of making decisions. Some people changes their mind as fast as they made it up and I believe it is very frustrating being on the receiving end. Luckily most of these people I encountered are not rabbit people. They are just some acquaintances that I deal with and I do not hope to bump into any rabbit people whom are like that. There are too many Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde around and I believe the world is beautiful enough without more.

Hope your every dealings in life goes smoothly and without glitches.

The waiting game

In the world today, there is so many things that are instant. We have instant noodles, fast foods and all sorts of things that we can acquire on the fly.

Unfortunately, it is so different with life. Take rabbits for instance, you have to wait for a doe to be willing to accept a buck, wait for a doe to kindle, wait for kits to grow, and the waiting list goes on for various part of the hobby.

Those are just some of the waitings which I call good waits. What I hate most waiting is going through some processes for acquire something. There is still no signs of us moving into the new place anytime soon and I am growing anxious by the days. I totally hate this because I am so looking forward to see my rabbits happy in the new rabbitry that I have planned out.

I for one will be the happiest to materialize the concept I have on my mind!

I just cannot wait go get things moving. Right now, we're just stuck!

Snip Snip...

I have been thinking a lot about rabbit neutering lately and guess what I found at the hardware store yesterday?

I found this wonderful cutting tool that is just perfect for the neutering procedure. It can cut through 5mm wire with ease.

Dear readers, NEVER EVER try this at home!

I AM JUST JOKING!!! This is the wire cutter for me to cut part of the cages off so that they could fit into my new shelving units. I am slowly getting all the materials needed to prepare for the move. Stay tuned for some nice DIY rabbitry constructions.

P.S.: This is an unrehearsed prank. Never EVER try to neuter/spay your pet(s) on your own. Please consult a qualified VETERINARIAN.

New Rabbitry Shelf: Proof Of Concept #1

I bought 2 shelving units earlier this afternoon to prepare for the move to our new place. I must say that it did not go as well as expected. It is mainly because firstly, the length of the shelving units were measured in millimeters and it was 1200mm. 1200mm is a little less than 48 inches and I thought it would be alright because my cages are barely 24 inches each when I measured them. Turned out, the length of the shelves cannot take two 24 inches cages! I need to improvise the length of the cages (by cutting of course). I will get that sorted out later.

Secondly, the Chloroplast sheet is exactly 4 feet (48 inches) and I do not have enough length to fold up the sides for it to work as pee guard. DARN! I went through it be trial and error and finally realize that I could use the wooden board that came with the shelving units as support for the Chloroplast sheets. I guess I need to find longer Chloroplast sheets then.

Overall, I would say that my first POC for a DIY rabbitry shelving unit with waste management FAILED badly!

Nonetheless, here are some photos:

Tru-Luv Holly Hope: Day 30

Here's more photos of this little precious:

My stand on Neutering/Spaying

I have always supported the cause for responsible pet ownership and if someone ask me if they should spay or neuter their pet rabbit, I would strongly encourage them to do so. And especially here in Malaysia.

I realize over time that we are overloaded with mixed breeds. Not that I am against mixed breeds, I am just against irresponsible breeding. I believe if you want to breed, make sure you breed for quality improvement and also always have the future generation on your mind. We must always be responsible for our future generation especially in what we want to pass on to them.

Mixed breeds make the best pets and there is no doubt about that. But for me personally, I prefer to venture into purebreds. So being an enthusiast of purebreds, my personal stand is that I share the best of my rabbits with fellow enthusiasts.

So as for neutering and spaying, I will strongly recommend it without thinking twice about it. Mainly because there are too many opportunists around that exploits their pets in the expense of money. In my humble opinion, if one breeds ethically, he or she may never gain any profit. When one gains profit out of breeding pets, usually they are cutting edges and the quality of the pets is at stake.

Neutering and spaying pets control to a certain degree the possibility that your pet will be exploited if they happen to be passed on from hand to hand. Most of these irresponsible breeders are so blinded by money that they could not be bothered with the genetic makeup of the rabbit.

Neutering and spaying will help control the number of unwanted pets.

Someone emailed me this morning and mention to me that he and his son is planning to neuter both their bucks. I strongly encourage that and I gave him credit for it because not only he is being a responsible owner, he is teaching his son to be the same. Very credible pet owner and this is the type of rabbit owner I would like to share my rabbits with. That being said, I hope I do not get loads of emails telling me that they plan to get a rabbit from me and they will spay/neuter them but ends up losing contact with me and the rabbits do not get spayed/neutered but instead when I get updates on them, they already had 3 "accidental" litters of bunnies.

I would neuter or spay my pets if they are not for breeding but at this moment, my aim is to produce good quality Holland Lops. Therefore, I cannot spay/neuter my rabbits.

Rabbits & Vaccinations

Someone asked me in the forum whether I would recommend vaccinations for rabbits. In my opinion, I will only vaccinate any of my pets based on the following:

1) Outbreak of disease
I do not find it necessary to vaccinate rabbits when there is no sign of outbreak. At this moment, there are 2 viruses that rabbits need to be vaccinated against - Myxomatosis & Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD).

2) Availability of vaccines
Of course it would not be possible to vaccinate rabbits if the vaccines are not available. Dogs and cats are the common pets being treated and vaccines for these pets are readily available. I cannot say the same for rabbits. And the sad reality is, not many local vets know how to treat rabbits and that alone tells me that they will never spend too much on stocking up on rabbit vaccines.

My conclusion is, I will not vaccinate my rabbits until it is absolutely necessary. I rather take prevention measure like keeping my rabbits free from mites and fleas which are the agent for the above mentioned viruses/diseases.

My opinion about Pet Shops

Usually, Pet Shops are the first stop for most pet seekers. Pet shops will be the first destination above all other alternatives and it is also where most impulsive buyers get cheated as well. Generally, pet shops paint quite a bad impression for those that have gone through bad experiences.

In my opinion, the main problem with pet shops is that people working in these places does not have passion for the animals. I strongly believe that knowledge is very important when dealing with anything. When one does not have the passion for the animals, most likely they will not be bothered to care or at least learn the proper way of handling them. Pet shops after all are just businesses and money normally comes first. With money being the emphasis, most will cut back on good(costly) diet to name a few issues that I have came to know.

But inevitably, pet shops are still the most common place where people acquire their pets because reputable breeders do not normally get expose to the market compared to these pet shops. I normally recommend my friends to seek out breeders instead of getting their pets from pet shops. And if one does enough research, they will be able to get in touch with one.

Why breeders and not pet shops? Here are some points:

1) Cleanliness
Pet shops are where animals from everywhere converges and diseases from any of these sources may spread to the entire batch of animals in the shop at that moment of time thus, buyers may end up paying extra for vet fees and worst still, having their pets die on them after building a bond in that short period of time. Many pet shops do offer to take back these sick animals but how many of us kind soul would agree to that?

2) Price
Pet shops normally earn at least 100% for the livestocks. For example, a common rabbit may be taken in at as low as $10 per head and sold for $45. Paying the $45 to the breeder directly will at least help him/her to improve on the quality of his/her herd.

3) Passed on knowledge
The main objective of pet shops is to close a sale. Money is the emphasis here. Therefore, most pet shop attendants are ill-informed or have zero knowledge to pass on to their customers. The customers end up raising their pet wrongly and as how they have been told by these ill-informed attendants.

SOLUTION:
I have learned that blogging blankly and not giving suggestions to correct problems highlighted affects my credibility therefore here are some suggestions:

1) Do not sell livestock
Pet shops can opt to just provide pet services - grooming, boarding and sale of pet products. Pet shops can also act as a mediator to recommend good and responsible breeders to buyers seeking for certain pets.

or

2) Educate employees
The management should spend more resources in educating staff with proper knowledge when dealing with livestocks. But this will go a long way. Customers will always come back if they are given accurate information. It is very important to disseminate and impart good knowledge when being the front liners and interacting with customer most of the time. This way, customer will have more confident in your services and satisfaction is almost guaranteed. With good knowledge, the animals are treated properly and that itself will help the shops to have healthy pets to offer.

To be frank, if I am able to find a pet shop that can convince me that my rabbits will be well taken care of, as a breeder I may consider supplying my rabbits to them. BUT, at this point of time, none has shown the least credibility to impress me to do so. Furthermore, because my rabbits are precious to me, I make it a point to know their progress and thus, I must know the new owners personally. Therefore, the only time I associate with pet shops is when I need supply for my rabbits because as far as non-livestock products are concerned, they are still able satisfy my rabbits' needs. I will also recommended shop for others to get their supplies but never their livestocks.

My hope for the local pet industry is that we not only have ethical, responsible and caring breeders but also, flawless pet shops. That way, we can all benefit from sharing all these wonderful animals with wonderful people getting them. In the long run, we will have ample of good things to go around for our future generations.

Only time will tell...

Why do I recommend Oxbow Hay Products?

Ever heard of the saying "The key to a man's heart is through his stomach"? Coincidentally, this saying is suitable for rabbits too.

The key to a healthy and happy rabbit is to keep his or her stomach healthy. Based on the many articles written on the internet, many have came to the conclusion that adult rabbits must be fed with a high fiber diet supported by 24 hour access to HAY. Hay promotes healthy gut movements.

I would just like to quote a number of articles on the internet that support this high fiber theory:

1) "Pellets should be fresh, and should be relatively high in fiber (18% minimum fiber)" - House Rabbit Society
2) "The best cure for GI stasis is prevention. Be sure your rabbit companion gets plenty of dietary fiber from fresh grass hay. Feed high fiber (22% or higher crude fiber) pellets" - GastroIntestinal Stasis, The Silent Killer by Dana M. Krempels, Ph.D.

I believe these 2 statements from highly reliable resources should be enough to tell us that we must work hard to keep our pet rabbits' stomach healthy always.

And let's take a look at the guaranteed analysis of Oxbow pellets:

  • Crude Protein min 14.00%
  • Crude Fat min 1.50%
  • Crude Fiber max 29.00%
  • Calcium max 0.85%

*taken from www.OxbowHay.com

A whooping 29.00%!!! isn't that great!??

Many rabbit owners have encountered a sudden death in their rabbits and normally brushes it off as a shock or heart attack. Little do they know that there were actually symptoms leading to the death of their rabbits. They are just not in tuned with their rabbits' eating habits. Normally, a rabbit will stop eating and drinking if it has got stomach upset.

Whenever you feed your rabbit, just take note of the amount that you gave and ensure that he or she have not left the food and water untouched. If that happens, quickly pack your rabbit and go to the nearest bunny-savvy vet and tell him or her that you are suspecting G.I. Stasis with poor bunny. You only have 24 hours to save your bunny's life.

I hope that will never happen to you. You will never be happier seeing poop but count your blessings when you see healthy poop in your rabbit's litter box!

Happy pooping bunnies!

Little Hope: Day 26

Little Hope's ears is drooping downward already! Normally the longer it takes the ear to droop, the better because that would mean shorter ears. But she's (I think it's a she) has got very broad crown!

Silent moments

It is so frustrating because the wait seemed to take forever. I am waiting to shift into the new place so that I can start on building some neat shelves to accommodate the rabbits. I have roughly planned out the waste management system and that will help me eliminate the use of litter materials. Getting rid of the need for litter materials will help me save a lot in the long run. It will not only save my pocket from running dry, but it will also stop contributing to global warming indirectly.

Other than that, nothing much seemed to be happening in the rabbitry but I am hoping for many interesting happenings once we shift the herd over to the new place.

The herd will first go through a rigorous fur mites elimination regime before we can actually bring them over to the new place. Stay tuned for more interesting postings.

BTW, I noticed that my blog stats is showing a decline in the number of visitors. I guess people just got all they need and have decided to quit coming back. Well, I hope not!

Raising Rabbits In Malaysia: The Paradigm Shift

I receive request for rabbit adoption occasionally and it is quite shocking how easily/conveniently people think that they can have full rights to any of my rabbits. Some approach me in demanding manner, some even make it seemed as if they deserve it and some made me felt as if I owe them something that it is a must for me to release my rabbits to them.

Here is something that I have to make it very clear to my dear readers who may approach me whenever I have rabbits for adoption (my adoption and sale pages have high hits). I may have given some wrong signal in my approach so I really must make this very clear because after a few adoption postings previously, people seemed to act as if I am in need and in that, they act as if I owe them something. I totally HATE that. When I put a rabbit up for adoption, let me make it very clear, the person adopting it owes me and my rabbit everything. I have taken all the trouble to raise my rabbit the best I can, I have even given it the best that I could provide and when the rabbit is under your care, you must at least do the same or better. I have done everything from its birth to the time I pass it to the adopter, great effort has already been exhausted to ensure a quality pet/companion being passed on.

So, my point is, if you are interested in my rabbits and when you approach me for an adoption, never ever ever ever and I beg you please, never make it as if you are so damn deserving and act as if you are taking away a burden from me. For it is never a burden and what I give to you is something of great importance for me. The amount of time and money I spent on the pet thus far, is indeed intangible. And for a potential adopter to approach me in an unacceptable manner is very insulting and I take full offense of it. My rabbits are no ordinary rabbits you think is dispensable. There is a value on each and every one of those little creatures and they are indeed priceless.

That brings me back to the topic of this post. The Paradigm Shift.

And yes, indeed we need a paradigm shift in our mentality pertaining to the way we raise rabbits or any other pets for the matter. The only thing that can bring about this shift, is indeed KNOWLEDGE. How do we gain knowledge? Simply through RESEARCH.

I must admit that there are so much to learn under the sun but at least we need to equip ourselves with knowledge or at least, the basic skill of acquiring those knowledge that can be turned into powerful tool.

Thus far, I can actually count with my ten fingers those that take their pet rabbits seriously and have done extensive research work on various topics. It wouldn't be hard for me to sieve through potential adopters because my expectations are high and I am able to identify bad adopters right away. Therefore, it is sometimes very difficult for me to choose a good adopter because there isn't much to begin with.

I am constantly thinking about the Malaysian mentality when it comes to pet raising. Many people see owning pets as an opportunity to gain profit. These people always see things in pairs - male & female. Their perfect picture also includes offspring of the pair of animals and that image is fast forwarded to CASH being passed from hand to hand. I would love it very much to blow that bubble for you! I have gone through it many times about how one cannot make any profit raising pets responsibly - the keyword RESPONSIBLY. Those that are able to make a profit out of their pets, well, I salute you but with different twist. I salute you for having the courage to have blood spilled in your hands just for the cash that you will be holding. I salute you for being able to live with a guilty conscience. I salute you for taking the courage to destroy the earth that we are living by filling it up with JUNK. I salute you for giving unto your own future generation these same JUNKS you produce today.

Imagine your children holding a rabbit that he/she loves dearly but the rabbit has got some genetic diseases or with splayed legs. Not that nice of a perfect picture isn't it? Would you want an imperfect pet to begin with?

I apologize to have strayed from the main topic once again. I really need to be focus and get back on track with the topic but somehow everything seemed to be intertwined and related.

I am constantly thinking of how we can have this paradigm shift fast forwarded so that we can help save thousands of lives in between a slower shift. I really need to get knowledge across as soon as possible so that many rabbits would not die in vain.

How can we shift from the general mentality of carrots being the staple food of rabbits (thanks to the famous cartoon character always holding a carrot) to people accepting the fact that hay very important in a rabbit's diet? How can we shift from the mentality of rabbits getting lonely to people accepting that spaying and neutering is a must in raising multiple rabbits?

We need a shift so that the general public will understand that rabbits do need medical attention just like any other living things. We are in dire need to have a shift in that pet service providers give equal attention to rabbit products.

Most importantly, how can we shift the mindset of breeding for money to breeding for quality and screw the money?

Last but not least, how can we ever shift the mindset so that ADOPTION becomes ADDITIONAL OPTION which is a GOOD thing? Adoption is never an indication of something negative because it always mean a better life for the adopted.

Also, if you plan to get a pet and do not have the money, I suggest you not getting any pet at all. If you cannot afford to pay for a pet, then you probably will not have money to maintain it. Simple as that! Please stop coming to me for adoption because you cannot afford to buy. I should soon put all my rabbits for sale because people seemed to think I am Santa Claus.

Let's bring about change and it starts from each and everyone of us!

Little Hope: Day 22

Little Hope is 3 weeks old today. I will not say he/she has passed the danger zone yet. I am still keeping my fingers crossed and that will be for another 5 weeks. I'll continue praying for his/her health. You can never be too sure when it comes to kits.

Determining the age of rabbits

I am beginning to doubt and be skeptical about the age of my imported does. So here I am going on a hunt for some information to ascertain and determine the age of rabbits. I learned quickly that it is merely impossible to determine the exact age.

But I stumbled across an answer that says that we can roughly estimate the age of rabbits by looking at the ears. The more veins they have, the older they are. I am going to give this method a try but how much is many and how much is less?

The search continues...

Anyone with knowledge on this topic please feel free to post your comments.

Holland Lop Varieties vs Human Varieties

A seasoned hobbyist of the Holland Lop or any other breed for the matter will tell you that every rabbit breed comes in different shapes, sizes and colors. When we say variety in rabbits, it mostly refers to the color of the rabbits in questioned.

But beyond the colors, I would also like to talk about behaviors. We all know that every individual rabbit have different behaviors and they are all unique. Some are nastier than another and some are sweet little creatures.

And looking beyond rabbits, we have their human counterparts. I have came across many rabbit owners that exhibit a wide range of behaviors. I believe breeders in US can also relate to my experience. More so when they have rabbit shows all around the country.

That is why, in our hobby, we must be aware and be vigilant on the tell tale signs of good and bad rabbit owners/breeders. I have my fair share of experience with ethical and unethical breeders. By experiencing all these hurdles I am able to identify a trustworthy and sincere rabbit owner/breeder from the opposites.

I just do not understand why sometimes certain people act the way they do. What is the point if you do not put in some passion to what you like doing? I believe to a certain point of time, most are raising their rabbits all for the wrong reasons. With this sort of attitude, I believe the hobby wouldn't last very long.

I do pray and hope that all rabbit owners/breeders have better temperaments. If they do not, perhaps we should start culling and blame it on the genes.

Note: This must be the first time I posting in a sarcastic manner. Sorry for that as I just realized something that pisses me off big time.

There are really nice rabbit people around

I just done chatting with a very reputable Holland Lop breeder from US and I must say that she is one of the nicest people that I have ever corresponded with.

You seldom end a conversation being totally speechless and that was exactly how I felt at the end of our chat. Speechless not in a bad way, but I was actually speechless because my heart was filled with JOY. Sheer joy. I have not felt so fulfilled chatting with someone for the longest time. She really made my day (now being 12.30 am, i am sure this will last the entire day).

We are trying to arrange something wonderful to take place soon. I hope by God's grace, everything will work out according to His will.

Thank you so very much "WONDERFUL LADY". You have truly showed me another side of this cruel world. You showed me that angels do exist! Much love from us all at Tru-Luv Rabbitry, buns and all.

I really want those keys to our new place now. I need more space for my bunnies!

Note: I am keeping this person's identity anonymous because I have not ask for permission to mention her name on my blog. Once I get approval, I shall disclose the name of this wonderful person.

Happy days ahead

Many years ago, the Malaysia government launched a project called Rakan Muda in hope of introducing and organizing many activities for the youth of the country. I believe it was a very good project because the minds of young people today needs to be stimulated. This is part of an effort to curb social ills among the youth. I am not too sure if this program is still available and I sure hope it does.

I did blog about the US version of Rakan Muda not very long ago called the 4-H project. I would like to revisit this project yet again.

Let me just start off by sharing my views on the main advantage of keeping pets as a hobby. Since young (very young), I have been raising animals as pets and it really thought me how to care for another being. It also thought me about taking responsibilities of another thing that has a life. But of course, I encountered many challenges and most of them was in the form of DEATHS. I lost count of the number of times my heart has broken for these dead pets. But through it all, there is always joy having pets around. A dear friend once told me that the great thing about keeping pets is that, we are able to see the entire life cycle - from birth to death of a living creature. This is something we cannot go through with a fellow human being. Most of us are only able to see the birth and others will see our death unless it is a premature death. What I am referring to is a full life cycle. Our pets allow us to go through this entire journey but this is not the reason one should use to consider having a pet.

That being said, I believe very much in instilling good values in children and young people through having pets. I dare say that 8 out of 10 selfish people in this world who only thinks about themselves do not have pets in their lives especially those growing up alone - single child. I definitely want my children to grow up with having pets in their lives. Love is the greatest value one can have in their life.

And back to the 4-H project, in the US, many families live in outskirt areas and most of these families do have a farmhouse. They have ample of land to cultivate some livestocks. At the same time, their communities are just so fun to be with because they form professional organizations to organize fun activities for all age groups in the communities. Now, we all know that most livestocks are kept for consumption. But these innovative people raise animals for consumption and also at the same time organizes shows for various breeds.

Just like a dog or cat show, these activities serve as an outreach program for the community to come together to appreciate the same passion. The 4-H project is where many hobbies are turned into activities for various communities. They have workshops on various types of projects/hobbies for newcomers as well as experts. They have craft making, animal raising and all sorts of worthwhile activities that allows young people to nurture their talents and further develop them.

I can go on writing about this 4-H program but so much has already been written and mentioned about it, I feel that it is appropriate for me to include a link for those who are interested.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4-H

My hope for our society is to revive the Rakan Muda or create a new program where this sort of activities could be introduce to our young people. It is far more rewarding than having our children racing down the highway with their bicycles.

BTW, I am keeping my fingers crossed again for something exciting happening next week. Trust me, it has got nothing to do with the word kindling or import. Something nice is happening pretty soon but until it happens, we shall all wait.
