Long Weekend Chillax

Here wishing every Malaysian a Happy Independence Day! We are indeed 52 years old. Hope we get ever wiser and advance full steam ahead!

As for the bunnies, they took turns to frolick and play in the run. They get full days running on weekends. This weekend everyone got to run since it was a long one.

Here are some photos to share. My photos are getting rather boring since it is always in the same position - LOL!

Adventures of Un-4-tunate!

Meet Un-4-tunate, our invincible Holland Lop!
Meet Un-4-tunate, our invincible Holland Lop!
Beep! Beep!

"Mom, this new tracking device is way cool!", said Luceel

"That's the last toy mommy can afford. Make sure you use it well and bring it wherever you go so I can track you down easily", his mom replied.

"I know just the right candidate to use this on", thought Luceel

WTH!?
WTH!?

"I release you from your bondage Un-4-tunate", said Luceel to his pet holland lop.

"Wherever you go, I'll be able to locate you through this screen", he thought to himself.

Beep! Beep! Beep! ... ... ...

"That rascal is heading to the pet store!", exclaimed Luceel

"Wait a minute, he stopped!"

Road Kill!
Road Kill!

The moral of the story is, NEVER let your bunny loose! They could be dead within minutes. Run over by a car and falling prey to stray animals such as cats and dogs are among the cause of death. Ensure you supervise their playtime and do not leave them unattended!

This is another community service reminder coming from TLR!

Bureaucracy Kills!

If you type in "define: bureaucracy" on your google search bar, the first best definition goes "any organization in which action is obstructed by insistence on unnecessary procedures and red tape".

I am sure in your lifetime you have at least heard of a certain recording artist being treated nasty, being put through all the red tapes and still not given a recording deal. Ultimately, he or she went on to be one of the greatest recording artist of all time. I am sure situations like these are quite familiar to everyone of us.

This sort of crap happens everywhere and it is just not in the entertainment world. Sometimes it really makes me wonder what good all these bureaucracies will do to a certain industry and most of the time it is only practiced by certain individuals who are usually very incompetent but yet absolute decision making and discretion powers and privileges.

I have always been in the shoes of a consumer and boy do I know very well what "customer is always right" means! I really enjoy being on the consumer side because I have the "power" to bargain. But I occassionally think about how being at the other end of the spectrum feel and operate.

A certain major pet store (or so it seemed) in my opinion have very good customer service. To make a sale, they will go all out and even go the extra miles. In their retail stores, there is a very clear path to where the CASHIER counters are. No bureaucracy or whatsoever. That's how desperate they want your money.

So being that little curious cat that I am, I randomly made a call to this "major" pet store and pretended that I wanted to "supply" something. Trust me, it really gave me a major heart attack. To get to the person in charge is like a series of CAT and MOUSE games. When the person I was looking for was finally available, she was basically "screened" by the person who picked up the phone. You can imagine a scene out of the medieval war times where the archers are protected by a line of pawns. It is absolutely stupid.

I am definitely not sure what are all the procedures and protocols are for these stuck up pet stores, but I found it really really unnecessary! Downright outrageous!

The first question they throw you is, "You're Mr. So & So from?". The "FROM" is so freaking important that it acts like a freaking password into the ears of the person who you are looking for. If you are unable to answer that question, you're not allowed access to his/her ears.

I could even hear the person telling this person I was speaking to exactly what to answer me. Isn't the previous statement super confusing? That's exactly what it is. Poor thing the messenger! At the end of it, she told me very crudely, her colleague is not interested in speaking to me! HOW RUDE!

The person also told me that it is normal procedure for potential suppliers to submit a proposal. Well, I say to hell with the proposal and all the procedures and protocols. Absolutely time wasting!

The way I look at it, this pet store really has got no vision to expand and it goes to show how much the economic situation is taking a toll on them. So much so that their staff are not even bothered to look into new business development and opportunities. The best part is, they have not even hear me out on what I have to offer!

I really wonder how these businesses are going to grow and thrive when it is filled with so much bureaucracy and red tapes. The best thing is, most of the time this pet store go on consignment! What a freaking joke. I believe they will still remain as a complacent pet store being how it is for another millennium or so.

Lucky thing for me, I am still at the consumer end and well, after that blood puking conversation, I have pledged to myself to give them HELL from now onwards!

What goes around comes around!

God sends Angels Into Our Lives!

I was messing around with the camera today. Always wanted to capture some angelic moments at home but unfortunately do not have a DLSR to work with. And while I was at it, I added Carmel as part of the photo prop and it was just natural watching Beth hugging this beautiful bunny.

Seven Bunnies A Week

I am down to 7 bunnies and will be down to 6 rabbits at the end of September. That is because Muffet will be going to spend her entire life with Truffles.

With 7 bunnies it is so much easier to rotate them in the bunny run. A run a day keeps the problems away! I used to rotate 2 bunnies every evening to have run in the play pen but now with just 7, I'll be able to let each one have more time in the playpen. And when the figure goes down to 6, then I'll have an off day. LOL!

Tonight it is Carmel's turn to have a run!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Muffet Buffet Begins...

While I am going through this "natural" herd reduction, I am offering Muffet for adoption. Please drop me an email at truluvrabbitry@gmail.com and tell me what you have to OFFER. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.

Liars and Cheats will not be entertained! If you are not a liar or a cheat, please don't be upset if I do not reply your mail.

Patience is a virtue?

Twenty to Thirty years - that is how long it took some of the best breeders in US to achieve their objective of producing top lops. Where am I? 3 years. Not even half way there. Will I be able to sustain for another 7 years at least? Probably provided that I am successful in getting what I have now bred. My numbers are decreasing. 3 bucks to 4 does out of which only 1 had given me a viable kit thus far.

Will I be able to sustain another 17 years? Most probably not. I am not too sure, it's too far ahead. It is really tiring and I am not sure if I could really take all the heartaches anymore.

When you go into Holland Lops, the odds are already against you. Viable litters most of the time comes only in 50%. Out of which your entire herd's death rate stands at approximately 20%. Which means out of 100, 20 would die due to unknown causes. I only have 7 right now. I really do hope that the odds leave me alone for a while, at least.

It is particularly hard being one of the pioneers of raising this breed in Malaysia. Have all my US breeder friends to thank for all the sharing of experiences. I've never seen a hobby that could take over your life but as the saying goes, Holland Lop rules!

Indeed they do...

Binky Free My Little Seychel

Thank you all for your prayers. I believe it has been answered one way or another. As I was preparing the pineapple juice, Seychel was already at her last lap of battle. She was very weak and I noticed something that gave me a reason believe that it was not G.I. Stasis.

It was very clear today that Seychel was having difficulty breathing. She was breathing through her mouth as I noticed her tilting her head upwards. I thought that my pineapple juice would be given in vain and I believe by using the syringe it would clog up her breathing passage further. By then she was struggling to sit upright.

I held her in my arms for a couple of minutes and she started to go into convulsion, let out a squek and breath her last.

As many articles have written, fur block or G.I. Stasis is caused by an underlying problem. There was a reason why Seychel wasn't eating and drinking. There are too many possibilities ranging from respiratory problems to even heart attack. Whatever it is I would like to put a rest to all the speculation and allow her to rest in peace. The only consolation I have is that, at least she was in my arms when she breath her last and no one else had to go through this pain except for me.

Good bye my dear Seychel, I prayed that you will get well and indeed you got much more than I prayed for. Send my regards to Unix, Micro, Latara and all the little TLR bunnies at rainbow bridge. Love you lots!

TLR is broken...

Through The Rain

So what happens after the thunderstorm? There is a moment of silence. The silence normally breaks with the sound of birds chirping. That is exactly what accepting the facts of life is all about for me.

Today will be the second day that I wonder what awaits me at home. We all do hope Seychel will come around and be well again. I have exhausted all resources and my mental strength in keeping her alive. I will continue to do the same this evening.

I have to remind myself to take pride in saving her (if I am able) but if she decides to give up, there is nothing much I could do. I'll always remember to stay cheerful in the presence of a sick bunny. They could pick the bad vibes up from us.

Let's see what happens...

Seychel's weak again

Short lived happiness. Another fact that you'll learn about rabbits. I think I should just stop posting because some people may be offended with the little humor and sarcasm in my postings. But what the heck, this is the real thing. This is what rabbit owners go through and like everything in this world, they are not all that beautiful.

Of course I'll love to paint a superficial and super nice picture of my life and my rabbits but let's all be realistic here. Life is not always that beautiful and that is a fact. When you're down, you're way down and you just cannot say you're fine. I mean you could say that you're fine but that's just lying to oneself.

Also, what is not said doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The fact of life remains that no one will ever admit anything that they have intention to hide.

What can I say about Seychel. I believe she's all clogged up again. I'll have to try treating her more aggressively this evening if she could pull through another day. I was happy that she was starting to chew on hay and was drinking on her own. But my gut feeling tells me that she's not doing too well this morning.

When situations like these arises, self-consolation usually kicks in. There are many things that I am telling myself which will not sound too good to certain people. So I am refraining myself from writing it out loud.

Seychel making some progress

Poo, Poop, Doodie, Doo Doo, Craps (stop laughing Teri!) or whatever you call it, definitely something most of us would not like to be associated to. Unfortunately, it is not the case with rabbits. If you're looking for something to represent the term "full of sh*t", look for a rabbit. Yes, I am writing out of frustration. What else to make myself feel happier than to be the most sarcastic, hormonal and emotional bloke on earth?

You've been warned, rabbits definitely bring out the worst in you. If you are a seasoned rabbit person, you'll realize how happy SH*T, POOP, Doo Doo and Crap can make you feel!

I've never come across any hobby that have high regards for such a disgusting thing! And yet, the more sh*t thrown at you, the more you are drawn to it! Just like a line from this movie that my wife is currently watching entitled "He's Just Not Into You". In the opening scene a little boy pushed a little girl and the girl's mommy told her that the reason why the boy was treating her badly was because he likes her. That's exactly how this love and hate relationship is between Man and Rabbit!

All that crap being said, I would like to thank all who have followed all the crap that has been happening at TLR and have prayed fervently. One thing I learn about rabbits so far is that, it's a challenge of who has got the bigger crap! Since I have been thrown so much crap, I'm making a bigger crap to be thrown back. That way, I am sure they will thrive and start to act like rabbits and thus, breed like rabbits!

Yes, I have had enough of them acting up on me and it is time to fight back with a vengence. NO MORE MISTER NICE GUY! And no bunny satay or fried bunny for dinner either. I am so not going to give them my love. They are so grounded!

And back to the topic of this post, I found some regular not that small poop on Seychel's tray. A small part of me rejoices but then again, not being too nice just in case anything should happen, I'll be able to say "Que Sera Sera"!

Here you go, the crap we all so love about our rabbits...

Left: No good Crap & Right: Not that bad Crap!
Left: No good Crap & Right: Not that bad Crap!

Seychel is not well

Sometimes I really wonder why in the world am I raising such a difficult breed. It is like keeping a python or a tiger knowing very well one day it will swallow you up whole. Holland Lops, they do swallow you up whole in terms of emotionally and psychologically.

Just when I wrote about how I have reminded myself not to take any of them for granted. Seychel stopped eating and drinking. It is as if it is a jinx to treat Holland Lops well. Throw them aside and they'll thrive, baby them and they'll die. LITERALLY!

Yes, I was "baby-ing" Seychel before she started acting up! How frustrating!

My initial diagnosis is that she's beginning to have a G.I. Stasis problem. But her vital signs are indicating many other possibilities.

Please pray for her and I do hope that she'll recover soon.

It is a challenging breed to begin with, that's if they just stop dying. No wonder people that get into this breed quit as soon as they begin. Am I beginning to give up?

Not quite but more of "Que Sera Sera" (Whatever Will Be Will Be)!

My Version Of A Perfect Holland Lop Part 2?

Extremely unsatisfied with my lack of talent, I persevered. I continue sketching, sketching and more sketching. Alas, this was by far the best I could produce. Indeed this shall be my objective and goal. My own perfect Holland Lop...

My Perfect Holland Lop!
My Perfect Holland Lop!

What do you think? Cute?

On the side note, I felt pretty refreshed this weekend. I realized how much I should not take my Hollands for granted. Taking a step backwards and realizing how each and everyone of them having a history of their own make them extra special and precious.

I believe what most breeders fear most is the possibility of losing their favorites and I am no exception. When we do loose our favorites, we kept on hoping that they would manifest themselves in the future generations of rabbits that we breed.

How we wish that our pets will never leave us. That way, it will save a lot of frustration and heart breaks.

But who are we to decide when we're merely weak human beings.

Have great week ahead everyone!

My Version Of A Perfect Holland Lop?

I have not touched a 2B pencil and a drawing board for a very long time. I just had an idea to put into drawing what I have in mind as a perfect Holland Lop for me. I guess it did not turn out that well. The fact remains that I am no better in drawing compared to my talented father and perhaps my daughter - LOL!

So here I was thinking, I want those nice crowns, thick short front legs, perfectly huge head that is 1/3 the size of the entire rabbit and hind legs tucked beneath the center of the mid section and so on and so forth. And guess how that turned out?
The future of TLR?
The future of TLR?

I know! I am bad with drawing and sketches - LOL!

Why are Holland Lops so precious?

Ever wonder why Holland Lops are so precious? Many Holland Lop friends have been telling me that I have chosen the hardest breed to work with - they weren't joking. I am in fact facing the most difficult phase of raising these wonderful creatures. Let me share the real scenario with you. When you go to any Holland Lop website, trust me, what you see on the website are the best of what the breeder have. It is very hard to breed Holland Lops (bad news for you money makers). If your "Holland Lops" are breeding like rabbits, don't get too excited, most often than not, they are FAKE! Sorry to burst your bubble - LOL!

Holland Lops are very hard to breed and even harder to get show quality kits. The possibilities of does kindling viable kits are as low as 50%! Let's just say that out of a 100 does bred, only 50 does will give you viable kits. And out of the 50 litters, you will be lucky to have 1 kit that may be competitive on the show table. That's 1% success rate for you my dear friend.

Now I truly understand why breeders chuckled at me when I ask for a show quality rabbit. Most often than not, breeders will never get too excited thinking they have struck gold in the nest boxes.

Just want to work on some statistics to see what are my chances.

100 does = 50% viable kits

5 does = 2.5 % viable kits

Which means, I may have to try breeding my 5 does 40 times before I can even get to the possibility of getting litters of viable kits. I am not even talking about getting a Show Quality kit.

So what do you think? Is Holland Lops for you?

Firstly, don't be easily fooled into thinking you got a Show Quality and definitely don't be fooled into thinking Holland Lops breed like rabbits. What we have at hand is a breed that defies all normalities! The Hallmark breed is called such for a reason. They are far from your ordinary bunnies.

Now, please blow the probability this way as I have 34 times to go!

Sunday 9 August 2009

Sunday Chillax!

I made some observation on all the bunnies' behavior while using the run. Most of them like to dig at the 4 corners and causes all the wood shavings to go flying out the play pen. I have since placed a corner litter tray at one of the corners. I then place tiles on the other 3 corners. The tiles worked out very well. I put cardboard boxes on top of 2 of the tiles and guess what?

They love chilling out on top of the cooling tiles!

Truffles' New Home

First of all, I must say that Bugsy is a VERY VERY nice little bunny! This little Siamese Sable (I think ND x Polish) is absolutely beautiful and his color is so amazing! Bugsy belongs to Shahfiq & Adesh (absolutely perfect couple). My parents say they move together - a match made in heaven indeed. LOL!

Shahfiq & Adesh are the proud owners of Tru-Luv Truffles. I am so thrilled to announce that they are photography enthusiasts as well. Just take a look at this photo they took and the amazing setup they have for both Truffles and Bugsy. The things we do for our bunnies - OMG!

Farewell TLR's 1st BRIS, TRU-LUV Truffles

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this post. At the same time I am very excited for Truffles' new owners. This couple has been contacting me for quite some time and I felt that it would be nice for them to have Truffles since I do not have many bunnies available at the moment. I am very glad that the lovely couple inquired and I must say that with great confidence, I am very happy to be passing Truffles into their care.

So tonight for a little farewell, I made Truffles pose for me. Anyway, he'll come back once in a while for boarding so I won't miss him too much.

Seemed like it was yesterday that Truffles came into this world. I could remember very clearly that he was the only one left from a litter of 3 born to Holly Hope. He was such a cutie back then and I knew he had quite thick bones. I could still recall how he nearly fell into wrong hands.

Let's walk down memory to reminisce the time when this little boy was born.

Great Bunday

The day before yesterday was a good Bunday. yesterday was a good Bunday and today is another good Bunday. I have to admit, everyday's a good Bunday in Meadow Haven.

First thing on the list today was Truffles. I brought him in for castration at approximately 1.30 pm. Just like Noobie, I couldn't help but to feel a little worried. But the moment I saw Dr. Loh, I was relieved. Somehow the vets at Hillpark always set my heart at ease. My wife and I was a little tickled by the fact that we're sending our BRIS bunny for castration. Shouldn't he be a stud back at Meadow Haven? Well, let's put it this way, I strongly believe that there will be more BRIS or even BIS to come from TLR.

Hugging the little "teddy" in the car

Approximately 30 mins after dropping Truffles off at the vets, I received a call from the clinic. My heart sank a little because that was too fast for a surgery and I have not even started cleaning 1 cage in the rabbitry. To my relieved, I was told that the surgery went well and Truffles was ready to go home. So off I went.

The locals call this "mengeram telur" (incubating egg)

On the way back from the vets, I found this wonderful shop that sells a lot of nice ornaments. I was previously looking for a door bell. And guess what I found! This made my home complete:

Tim "The Rabbit & Tool Man" Taylor stikes again!

Rabbits in TLR are let loose on rotation for their daily runs. As of late, I have been really lazy to clean up after every run. Sometimes they tend to be a little cheeky and leave a lot of pee and poop for me to clean up. I finally stopped procrastinating and went ahead with what I love to do over the weekend - Rabbit DIY. This time I built an indoor Rabbit Run - limited apartment space. It is good to have a run so that I do not need to worry too much about pee and poop. Also, I do not need to worry about having my electrical cords chewed by these rascals.

I must mention that this design is inspired by Alicia of Pet Epicure and all those NIC panel peeps! Thank you!

Ingredients for a perfect rabbit run:

1) 3 big chloroplast board

2) 1 roll of cloth tape

3) 1 tube of clear sealant

4) Lotsa cable tie

5) Binding rings (I think so)

Step 1:

Lay all Chloroplast board side by side, tape them together, turn them around and apply sealant at joins.

There you have it, another great DIY project from TLR! Have a nice weekend and stop protesting!

P/S: Please pray for Truffles. He's going for his castration tomorrow. New owners are awaiting for his safe return home next week! All bunnies paws together now!
